How can we measure print ad effectiveness ?

Need to present to my clients the methods and ways of measuring if an print ad campaign has been successful or not.

Have thought of several ways of measuring, but wanted a wider opinion.

Some methods thought of are

a) inserting a number in the ad for people to call and inquire
b) inserting a promotion coupon in the ad for people to claim when buying
c) calling up the store / retail partners to see if sales response to the ad.

That’s about it. Although there are methods that can be combined.
I’m an online person so, if your business is online based you can also use a dedicated URL in your print ad. Furthermore if your print ads are distributed to a specific location then you can use some sophisticated traffic solution and compare your reach by zip code, city or state.
