Are U.S. retailers more frantic to make sales than ever this year?

I live in a rural area, and do a lot of business through the mail. Every online mail order retailer I have ever done business with has been stuffing my mailbox (both in real life and online) with offers, coupons, sales… you name it.

A couple have even made sales calls to my home number “just to let you know about our special bargains.”

And this morning, December 25th, I’ve gotten a flood of “after-Christmas sales” offers.

Even though I know that most of them depend on the end-of-the-year period to make up a significant portion of the year’s transactions, I can’t recall a year when the sales approaches seemed more frantic.

Has the retail sector gotten out of recession? Or are they in more trouble than ever?
.

admin answers:

I think they are still in deep trouble, and that’s why they are so frantic to make sales, reducing prices, and bargaining. The problem exists because more people than ever are unemployed and people have generally become more frugal.

I heard that a lot of Borders bookstores are closing. They said they are having a clearance sale and that everything must go. It just so happens that the Borders close to where I work is closing. I visit the store and it’s packed!! And guess what, the clearance sale is only 20% off. How absurd! I’ve gotten Borders Rewards coupons for 33%, 40% and 50%. Not to mention that Amazon discounts their books for A LOT more than 20%. They can do better than 20%. Come on. And the fact that the store is crowded just goes to show that people are going gaga over this ridiculous discount.

Why is Borders so stingy with their clearance sale? And why are people going crazy over a measly 20% discount?

admin answers:

Well, they are more or less going out of buisness, no sense trying to give the store away. I dont know if its the case with borders, but some chains sell off entire stores to be liquidated, so it may be someone, some group, paid for all those books, and has to make sure they get their money back before the big discounts.

admin answers:

Yes, your professor is correct, this was done at one time when coupon bonds were issued and traded freely. And in the late 60′s there were referred to as stripped bonds.

However, there are not that many coupon bonds out there and when the coupons are stripped off the bond, the value of the bond is reduced substantially, more than the value of the stripped off coupons. And when selling the bond, it most be related to the buyer that the bond is being traded without coupons.

In theory, yes you can do it, in reality it would be very difficult since there are not that many coupon bonds. When you strip the coupons, then submit them for payment you may have to submit proof of ownership.
The profit margin in selling a stripped bond is not that great, since they buyer knows that they are not going to receive any interest during the life of the bond nor at maturity.

A bond with the coupons stripped is not a zero coupon bond, its just a bond that was issued to pay interest only with the presentation of the coupons

There are no regulations preventing someone from cutting the coupons from a bond, then selling the bond

Need help with business plans..?

I am a fourth year university student.

Recently, I have started my part-time photography business. I teach photography as well as take pictures for events, corporations, individuals, etc. I advertise online and get a good response. But I am having problems converting client requests into actual sales. I am looking for some help and guidance in this regard. I charge reasonable rates and my clients and students are very satisfied. How I can improve my client conversion percentage?

I am also thinking I need to develop some PR skills. I am in the midst of getting my website and business cards ready. But I was thinking what ‘added’ stuff can I offer my clients. One thought that came to mind was offering them discount coupons from retail outlets where they buy their camera accessories. Any other ideas?

Any help is appreciated.

admin answers:

You might have more luck with this question in the SEO section of Y!A. The conversion could be due to your copy, not asking for the sale multiple times, your competition’s better, or you’re trying to use an old form of flash that your prospect’s browsers are blocking, etc. Oh, make sure you have client testimonials up there too. And yes, any kind of promotion that is not advertising is generally considered PR, including the words on your site.

From a business perspective, figure out if teaching class or event photography is more transactional and easy to sell. Focus on one so that you don’t confuse the message on your website. It’s okay to mention the other (especially in support of what qualifies you to do event photography or teach), but only sell one thing. If you focus on one message, that message will be clearer.

Totally free. You only pay per customer that comes in. Better than paying and praying! I’ve worked with YouSwoop and Groupon both before. Both have great business relations. I found Groupon overloaded my business a bit too much with too many people. YouSwoop gave me a few hundred new customers. Just what I needed.

Shopping online… it never fails.

Does anyone know when coupons or discounts are usually issued (i.e. every tuesday, every month on he 15th, etc.)? I kinda believe that retail is for suckers. =)

P.S. I hope this is in the right catergory… I couldn’t find one that focused only on shopping.

admin answers:

This actually is a newest marketing trend and most retailer trying to boost their online sales as its more cost effective in most situations. There is no date of any such discount vouchers (except if some retailer issues them on special occasion like anniversary etc). Since they want to keep and increase their online customer base, they tend to offer such incentives to potention buyers since they know you have already shopped with them and are a serious buyer.
